Cf. Bancroft, Mexico, i. 21; Valentini in Magazine of American History, iii. 295, who supposes that the land usually thought to be an incomplete Cuba in Ruysch’s map of 1508 (p. 115, ante) is really Yucatan, based on the results of the so-called first voyage of Vespucius, and that its seven Latin names correspond to a part of the nineteen Portuguese names which are given on the western shore of the so-called Admiral’s map of the Ptolemy of 1513 (p. 112, ante). Peschel (Geschichte der Erdkunde, 1865, p. 235) also suggests that this map is the work of Vespucius.
