Note 5 — INTRODUCTION
Constance Garnett translation
Natalya Alexyevna’s version is slightly different. She gives Emma Vogt’s age as sixteen, and says that when the girl’s parents were returning to America Herzen begged them to leave her in London, ‘but they insisted on taking her with them.’ Neither Madame Passek nor Madame Ogaryov can be relied upon for perfect accuracy, but I think the latter is the more trustworthy.
