Constance Garnett translation

Sir George Grove in his Dictionary of Music and Musicians says of Jullien (originally Julien): ‘No one at all in the same category has occupied anything like the same position in public favour. His name was a household word and his face and figure household shapes during a period of nearly twenty years.’ ‘To Jullien is attributed the immense improvements made in our orchestras during these twenty years.’ Among other works he composed The Allied Armies Quadrille (Crimean War, 1854), The Indian Quadrille and Havelock’s March (Indian Mutiny, 1857), The English Quadrille, and The French Quadrille.—(Translator’s Note.)
