Note 19 — CAMICIA ROSSA

Constance Garnett translation

The Alabama was a vessel built by a British firm in a British port for the Southern States in the American Civil War. It did great damage to the shipping of the Northern States, capturing sixty-five ships. Feeling on the subject ran so high that at one time there seemed a danger of England’s taking part in the war on the side of the South.—(Translator’s Note.)
