Constance Garnett translation
Grandville, Jean-Ignace-Isidore (born 1802), was one of the most celebrated book-illustrators of his time. Perhaps his most famous book is Les animaux peints par eux-mêmes. He was deeply interested in animals, insects, and fishes, and drew them wonderfully. He edited La Caricature, in which all the most eminent people of his time in Paris are depicted. He died, insane, in 1850.—(Translator’s Note.)
