Théroigne de Méricourt, called ‘l’Amazone de la liberté,’ assisted at the taking of the Bastille and became a popular heroine. Later on she was publicly whipped by a crowd of women, and lost her reason in consequence of this outrage.—(Translator’s Notes.)
