Mission from Cape Coast Castle to Ashantee

Note 46 — Chapter I

Reading edition

“At times the water of this lake is hot, and it boils and bubbles with a great noise, often overflowing the surrounding country. The bones of fish thrown up by the volcano are so numerous, that the Arabs mix them in the swish of their houses. There are a great many islets in the lake, which is so extensive, that they cannot see the end. Between it and the Quolla rises a very high hill, from the top of which is an extensive view; it is a day’s journey from the water on either side. The Arabs eat black rice, corn, and sweet beans, called Tummer.” W. H.
