Military Architecture in England During the Middle Ages

Note 113 — Chapter V · THE BEGINNING OF THE STONE CASTLE

Reading edition

See Yorks. Archæol. Journal, xx. 132, where the evidence quoted points to the conclusion “that the doorway was not erected later than about 1075.” Harvey, Castles and Walled Towns, p. 85, assumes that the doorway was cut through the south wall of the tower at a later date: the evidence of the masonry is decisively against this idea.
