Note 34 — MILTON ABBEY

Reading edition

This thirteenth century inscription is discussed in the Dorset Nat. Hist. and Antiquarian Field Club’s Proceedings, vol. xxv., 187 ff. One wonders if this indulgence was granted by Robert Kilwarby, Archbishop of Canterbury, on the occasion of his visit to Milton Abbey in 1277. The indulgence was offered, presumably, to those who would contribute to the fabric fund of the chapel.
