Note 75 — Chapter III
Reading edition
It was (Lady Augusta) the eldest, “afterwards Duchess of Brunswick.” As it was necessary to have the Privy Councillors present at the birth of an Heir-Apparent to the Crown, which was prevented by this rash step, the Prince sent messengers, as he was upon the road, to Chiswick and Lambeth, to fetch Lord Wilmington and the Archbishop of Canterbury; but they arrived too late. The Princess was put into a bed that had not been prepared, for which the Prince and Lady Archibald Hamilton were forced to air the sheets. The Queen followed them early in the morning, and asked Lady Archibald, “how she dared to bring away the Princess in that manner?” who turned to the Prince, and said, “You see, Sir, I told you it would be laid upon me.”
