Mâalem means Master or Mister: as Mâalem Yusef, Mr. Joseph. Mâalem is never applied but to Christians; a Turk would repudiate such an appellation: he is Sheyk, Aga, Effendi, &c., which additions to his name a Christian in Turkey dares not assume.
