The Greek word Ἑρμαφροδιτος is a compound of Ἑρμης, Mercury, and Αφροδιτη, Venus—a mixture of Mercury and Venus, i. e. of Male and Female. The Greeks also called Hermaphrodites Ανδρογυνοὶ, i.e. men-women.
