Editorial note — Chapter XVI · Poor Jenny.

Reading edition

A. The whole of this ballad is to be found in a curious collection of Scotch songs entitled “Whistle Binkie.” The book is somewhat rare, and I do not chance to have it by me at the moment; but I believe the verses quoted above were written by Motherwell; and I know that they, as well as the “King’s Ride,” referred to on page 215 (the name of the author of which I am unable to learn), have recently been most charmingly set to music by Miss Elizabeth Philp.
