Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature - 4. Naturalism in England

Note 1 — NATURALISM IN ENGLAND (continued 7)

Mary Morison translation

Must be a mistranslation. In the last Danish edition (printed 1924) and in Brandes' collected writings (printed 1900) the text goes "and left it to the lady to consider her words." The translation in the English edition should probably read something like "leaving Madame—and a numerous audience to ponder at their leisure on the dialogue between them."—Transcriber's note.
