Note 258 — Chapter XV · (continued 3)
E. M. Lamond translation
Doctor Johann Mensing, O.P., a literary opponent of Luther’s, in dedicating a polemical tract of 1526, defends the Catholics’ sense of patriotism, speaking of Luther as the “destroyer of our fair German land” (see “Luthers Werke,” Weim. ed., 8, p. 478). Another Dominican, Thomas Rhadinus Todischus, in 1520, in the title of a work published at Rome, describes him as “violating the glory of the nation” (“nationis gloriam violans”). The latter work was attributed by Luther and Melanchthon to Emser, who, however, repudiated the authorship. Cp. ibid., 7, p. 259.
