Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent (vol. 2 of 2)

Note 319 — Chapter VI

Robert Harrison translation

Spedaletto, which passed after Lorenzo’s death to Maddalena Cybò and later to the Corsini family, to whom it still belongs, was visited in November 1654 by Cardinal de Retz, coming from Spain by sea, before he proceeded to the Grandduke Ferdinand II. at the Ambrogiana near Empoli, and thence to Rome. He knew that the villa, which he calls L’Hospitalità, had belonged to Lorenzo de’ Medici, but he wrongly places here the scene of the battle in which Catiline fell. Mèmoires du Card. de Retz, pt. iii. ch. i. Ed. by Champollion-Figeac (1866), iv. 246.
