Note 40 — THE ANCIENT SCHOOLS IN THE CITY OF LONDON
Reading edition
The true reading is no doubt collectantes as in Pegge’s edition, not colluctantes as in the Rolls edition. Collections is a term still in use for college examinations at Oxford. Anciently it was a sort of “Speech Day” at which the masters collected fees of a more or less voluntary character from their pupils.
