Note 489 — CXXXI.—To Farel.[488]
Reading edition
The Jesuit Maimbourg, in his Histoire du Calvinisme, lib. ii., states the number of these victims as amounting to 3600, and carries the number of the houses pillaged and destroyed as high as 900. According to De Thou, twenty-two bourgs and villages were reduced to ashes. The whole country, which had previously presented the aspect of a cheerful pleasure garden, was reduced to a desert and uncultivated wilderness.
