Sir Joseph Banks, president of the Royal Society from 1778 until his death in 1820, was the patron of discoverers, having himself voyaged around the world with Captain Cook (1768–71). He was especially interested in Northwest exploration, and the customs and habits of primitive people, and to him Alexander Henry dedicated his Travels and Adventures in Canada.—Ed.
