In the first century of our era Aristo of Pella is said to have been the author of an attempt to prove from the Prophets that Jesus was the Messiah. Justin Martyr followed in his path, and the latter writer’s arguments subsequently reappear in the works of Tertullian and other Fathers. See W. Trollope’s edition of S. Justini Dialogus, p. 4.
