Note 268 — Chapter LIV · WILLIAM III. IN IRELAND, 1690. THE BOYNE

Reading edition

Payen de la Fouleresse stood close to William while the Danes were crossing and heard him praise them: he wrote his letter on a drum next day. In his letter above cited Douglas says, ‘The enemy’s horse fought wonderfully bravely as ever men could do.’ Payen’s letter to his sovereign Christian V. of Denmark, July 2, 1690, is in Notes and Queries, July 1877.
