Writing to Walpole in March, 1751, Gray says: 'In the last volume [of Peregrine Pickle] is a character of Mr. Lyttleton [sic], under the name of "Gosling Scrag," and a parody of part of his Monody, under the notion of a Pastoral on the death of his grandmother' (Works by Gosse, 1884, ii. 214).
