P. 75, c. 2. Elsewhere (p. 220) we learn that Clothar recognized the right not only of the clergy but of the people of Tours to go tax-free. The story told in this chapter would indicate that the bishop of Tours was the natural leader of the bishops of Clothar’s kingdom. Cf. Introd., p. x.
