Note 212 — Chapter VII

Reading edition

In the barbarous rhymed Latin poem, printed with great care by Sandoval, (Reyes de Castilla, Pamplona, 1615, f. 189, etc.,) and apparently written, as we have noticed, by some one who witnessed the siege of Almeria in 1147, we have the following lines:—

Ipse Rodericus, Mio Cid semper vocatus, De quo cantatur, quod ab hostibus haud superatus, Qui domuit Moros, comites quoque domuit nostros, etc.

These poems must, by the phrase Mio Cid, have been in Spanish; and, if so, could hardly have been any thing but ballads.
