Reading edition
In April 1528 Santiago was made the capital of the province, Puga, Cedulario, 27; and in 1532 was granted armorial bearings, which are thus described by Juarros: 'A shield charged with three mountains on a field Gules, the centre one vomiting fire, and surmounted by the Apostle St James on horseback, armed, and brandishing a sword; an Orle with eight shells; Or, on a field, Azure; crest a crown.' Guat. (ed. London, 1823), 105. For other descriptions see Vazquez, Chronica de Gvat., 37; and Arévalo, Col. Doc. Antig., 5-6. A lithograph of the shield faces page five of this last authority, and a wood-cut of it, somewhat different, is to be seen in Gonzalez Dávila, Teat. Ecles., i. between pp. 138 and 139.
