Note XXX‑26 — Chapter XXX · FURTHER PIRATICAL RAIDS. 1681-1687.
Reading edition
The loss of Spaniards in this engagement is not known, but Dampier makes the doubtful statement that the pirates lost only one man. Voy., 209. The account given by Lussan, who was on Harris' ship, differs materially from that of Dampier. He asserts that the treasure-fleet succeeded in getting to Panamá unnoticed by the buccaneers, and that seven vessels then sailed out and engaged with them, with nearly the same results as those described by Dampier. Harris' ship received above 120 common shot, and those of Davis and Swan suffered severely. Journal du Voy., 79-88. The difference in dates between Dampier and Lussan is explained by the fact that the French had three years before made a change of ten days in their calendar which the English government had not done.
