Note XXIII‑7 — Chapter XXIII · DRAKE AND OXENHAM'S EXPEDITIONS. 1572-1596.

Reading edition

In the account of Lopez Vaz, in Hakluyt's Voy., iii. 179, it is stated that Drake had with him 100 English besides the negroes. This is clearly a mistake, for the evidence is conclusive that he left Plymouth with only 73 men, and he could have had little chance to recruit his force except from the cimarrones; though, as remarked by the author of Drake, Cavendish, and Dampier, 59, he may have been reënforced from the vessels which he met with off the coast.
