Note XXVII-36 — Chapter XXVII · REVOLT OF THE CAKCHIQUELS. 1524-1525.

Reading edition

The Cakchiquels are said to have applied the word Mem to the Maya-speaking tribes. This word, meaning 'stutterers,' was corrupted by the Spaniards into Mames. They occupied that portion of the country which lay between the Quiché territory and Chiapas, now the province of Totonicapan. See Native Races, ii. 128, v., passim.
