Note XXI-12 — Chapter XXI · RIVAL GOVERNORS IN HONDURAS AND NICARAGUA. 1526-1530.

Reading edition

Besides the usual humane injunctions it was ordered that towns should be founded near the Indians, so that they might be brought by example and gentle means to a knowledge of the true faith, and be led to adopt the manners and customs of Christians. To promote this desirable end the royal officers were enjoined to watch strictly over the moral and economic features of the Spanish settlements. The revolted Chorotegas were to be pacified by kindness, and the native slaves brought from Panamá were to be returned. Herrera, dec. iv. lib. i. cap. viii. See chap, v., note 5, this volume.
