Note 33: (retour) Le Dr. O'Callaghan m'écrivait d'Albany, le 17 juillet 1852, «If you are to blame the movement, blame then those who plotted and contrived it and who are to be held in history reaponsible for it. We, my friend, were the victims, not the couspirators, and were I on my death bed I could declare before heaven that I have no more idea of a movement or resistance when I left Montréal and went to the Richelieu river with M. Papineau, than I have now of being bishop of Québec, And I also know that M. Papineau and I secreted ourselves for some time in a farmers home in the parish of St.-Marc, lest our presence might alarm that country and be made a pretext for rashness... I saw as clearly as I now see the country was not prepared.»
