There is historical proof for the existence of confraternities of the Holy Rosary in the second half of the fifteenth century. That founded in Cologne in 1474 by Prior Jacob Sprenger, O.P., was celebrated. Th. Esser, U.L. Fr. Rosenkranz, Paderborn, 1889, 289. It was confirmed by Sixtus IV. in 1478.
