Note 637 — Chapter XVIII · WRESTLING

Reading edition

Ox. Pap. iii. 466. For a full discussion of it vide Jüthner, Philostratus, p. 26. With the papyrus may be compared a curious passage in Lucian’s Asinus, c. 9, and an epigram in Anth. Pal. xii. 206. The latter, like the passage in Lucian, is probably erotic. Such a metaphorical use of wrestling terms is common. Cp. Aristoph. Pax 895, Av. 442, and the expressions ἀνακλινοπάλη, κλινοπάλη.
