Reading edition

Callaway, in a paper on “Divination among the Natives of Natal” (Journal of the Anthropological Institute, vol. i. p. 176), says that the natives, “in order to become clairvoyant, attempt to effect intense concentration and abstraction of the mind—an abstraction even from their own thoughts.” And this is done by herdsmen and chiefs alike—though of course with varying success.
