Fossil Butterflies

Note Q — DESCRIPTIVE.

Reading edition

It should first be premised that throughout this description the fore wing will be spoken of as if it were perfect; for so completely are the essential parts preserved that one may feel a strong degree of confidence as to the character of the remainder; scarcely any of the costal margin can be traced on the stone, and yet one may describe with nearly absolute certainty the point where the extremities of the costal and the first two upper branches of the subcostal nervures strike it. For those, therefore, who would follow the description with a severely critical eye, the illustrations we have given will correct any apparent overstatement of the text.
