The real name of the hill was Kahonunuimaeleka,23 a turtle, and had flippers on the sides. Whenever these flippers closed the hill would extend up to the heaven. Around this hill was a fence called Paehumu composed of ti-leaf of Koaea and the ulei of Nuuhiwa. These things grew so close together that they served as a windbreak, and no wind could touch the chief’s house, called Halehuki.
