Note 574 — Chapter VI · PRE-CHRISTIAN GNOSTICS: SIMON MAGUS
Reading edition
Irenaeus and Epiphanius (where before quoted) both call this second partner in the first pair of “Roots” Ἔννοια. Hippolytus, op. cit. Bk VI. c. 1, § 13, p. 251, Cruice, has Ἐπίνοια. Does this mean “after-thought” or “second thought” as showing her posteriority to Nous? At any rate it is some indication that he is copying from a different source than that of his predecessors. King (Gnostics and their Remains, 2nd ed. p. 61) would translate Ἐνθύμησις by “thought,” while he calls Ἔννοια “Intelligence.” The Abbé Cruice translates Ἐνθύμησις “Conceptio.” It seems here to mean Desire not in a fleshly but a mental sense.
