This seems to have been first set on foot by Baur and the Tübingen school, and has lately been revived by Schmiedel in the Encyc. Bibl. s.v. Simon Magus. Even if we were to admit that it was well founded with regard to the Clementines, it would not get rid of the testimony of the Acts and of Justin Martyr that Simon Magus had an actual historical existence.
