Note 145 — Chapter II · THE ALEXANDRIAN DIVINITIES

Reading edition

Bouché-Leclercq (Hist. des Lagides, I. p. 129, n. 2) thinks the tradition that the Museum was founded by Ptolemy II Philadelphus erroneous. The date of Demetrius of Phalerum’s leaving Athens to take charge of it marks it as the foundation of Ptolemy Soter. Cf. Mahaffy, Empire of Ptolemies, pp. 91, 92.
