Note 46 — Chapter IV

Reading edition

This supposes the earth’s circumference to have been reckoned 240,000 stadia, giving 83⅓ miles to a degree of the meridian. By the calculation of Eratosthenes, the circumference of the earth was 252,000 stadia, which gives exactly 700 stadia, or 87½ miles to a degree.
