Note 1908 — Chapter VIII · THE LATER YEARS OF RICHARD. 1194–1199.
Reading edition
Will. Armor. (as above)·/·Philipp., l. v. (Duchesne, Hist. Franc. Scriptt., vol. v.), p. 155 says the treasure was discovered after Mid-Lent. But Rog. Howden (as above,·/·(Stubbs), vol. iv. p. 84), Gerv. Cant. (Stubbs, vol. i. p. 593), R. Coggeshall (Stevenson, p. 95), and the Ann. of Margam, Winton. and Waverl. a. 1199 (Luard, Ann. Monast., vol. i. p. 24, vol. ii. pp. 71, 251), all tell us that Richard received his death-wound on March 26—Friday, the morrow of Mid-Lent—and R. Coggeshall adds that this was the third day of the siege, which must therefore have begun on Wednesday, March 24.
