Note 1678 — Chapter VII · RICHARD AND ENGLAND. 1189–1194. (continued 2)

Reading edition

That it was so in the reign of Henry I. seems plain from Orderic’s story about Ralf Flambard re-measuring for William Rufus “omnes carrucatas, quas Angli hidas vocant” (Ord. Vit., Duchesne, Hist. Norm. Scriptt., p. 678)—a statement which, whether the story itself be correct or not, shews that Orderic himself was accustomed to hear carucates and hides identified. The settlement of the carucates at a hundred acres in 1198 points to the same identification.
