Note 629 — Chapter IV · HENRY AND THE BARONS. 1166–1175.

Reading edition

There is some doubt as to the date of John’s birth. Rob. Torigni (ad ann.) places it in 1167; R. Diceto (Stubbs, vol. i. p. 325) in 1166. The prose addition to Robert of Gloucester’s Chronicle (Hearne, vol. ii. p. 484) says that he was born at Oxford on Christmas Eve. As Eleanor seems to have been in England at Christmas-tide in both years, this gives us no help. Bishop Stubbs (Introd. to W. Coventry, vol. ii. p. xvii, note 3) adopts the later date.
