Gerald himself goes so far as to say, with respect to Richard’s appointment of William of Longchamp as justiciar, “cui archidiaconum adjunxit” (De Rebus a se gestis, dist. ii. c. 21, Brewer, vol. i. p. 84). We find however no hint of such a thing elsewhere.
