Note 80 — Chapter III · Second Visit to New England
Reading edition
Captain William Hathorne was a Salem magistrate. His descendant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author (1804-1864), writes of him: “He was a bitter persecutor, as witness the Quakers, who have remembered him in their histories” (The Custom House, quoted in Jnl. F.H.S. xii). See Bishop, op. cit.; Felt, Annals of Salem, 1842.
