Reading edition
It is instructive to observe the order in which Elijah recounts the sins of Israel: 1st—"they have forsaken Thy covenant;" 2nd—"they have thrown down Thine altars;" 3rd—"they have slain Thy prophets with the sword." The ground of all this evil was their having forsaken the covenant of God, the natural consequence of which was the throwing down of God's altars, and the abandonment of His worship, which latter was followed out by killing the prophets. We can understand this order.
