Frankfurt a. M., Frankfurt-on-the-Main (river), a far-famed city of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau.—From 1562 to 1792 the German emperors were crowned in the Frankfurt Cathedral. The town was also the residence of the German kings under the Franconian Dynasty, 768-911, after whom the town has been named.
