Ecclesiastical History of England, Volume 1—The Church of the Civil Wars

Note 353 — Chapter XII

Reading edition

Scarborough church was stormed in 1644 by the Parliament soldiers, and afterwards fortified by them. It is remarkable to find church towers so constructed, as to shew they were intended for warlike purposes. Melsonby and Middleham, in Yorkshire, and Harlestone, in Northamptonshire, are examples.—Poole's Ecclesiastical Architecture, 358.
