Note 1 — DEDICA SECONDA
Reading edition
M.r Guizot has, in one of his admirable pamphlets, happily and justly described M.r Lainé, as «an honest and liberal man discouraged by the revolution.» This description at the time when M.r Dumont’s Memoirs were written (an. 1799), would have applied to almost every honest and liberal man in Europe; and would beyond all doubt have applied to M.r Dumont himself (Macaulay’s Essays. Paris, Baudry, 1843, p. 183).
