Lord Castlereagh aan den Minister van Oorlog en Koloniën Lord Bathurst, Bazel 22 Januari 1814 (Castlereagh's Corr. IX, 181). Dit punt was in den Haag door Hogendorp met Lord Castlereagh besproken: „My attention”, schrijft deze den 8sten Januari 1814 aan Engelands eersten minister Lord Liverpool, „was called to this [the succession] by an observation of that Minister [Hogendorp] as to the expediency of making provision for the separation of the two Crowns in the Act, which would shortly be proposed for regulating the succession to the crown of Holland under the new Constitution.” (Ged. VII, 24). Dit is de aanleiding geweest tot de vaststelling van art. 8 der Grondwet van 1814, waardoor verandering in de troonsopvolging mogelijk werd gemaakt (Ontstaan I, 433; II, 418, 423).
