Note {90a} — COMPARATIVE PSYCHICAL RESEARCH

Reading edition

In the Salem witch mania, a similar case of levitation was reported by the Rev. Cotton Mather. He produced a cloud of witnesses, who could not hold the woman down. She would fly up. Mr. Mather sent the signed depositions to his opponent, Mr. Calef. But Calef would not believe, for, said he, ‘the age of miracles is past’. Which was just the question at issue! See Beaumont’s Treatise of Spirits, p. 148, London, 1705.
